How to Build a Dog Run

June 17, 2009

Begin by measuring and marking the area where you want your dog kennel and run. Clear the area of any obstructions. Posts will need to be set in concrete to ensure stability of the fencing. When determining the depth of posts holes, consider local climate as they may need to be below the frost line.

After the concrete around the posts has cured attach the chain link to the fence posts using fence ties.

Dogs dig – that’s what they do. Preventing escape can be accomplished in several ways. Use chicken wire, attached to the chain link and buried under the ground or dig a trench and recess the chain link 6”-8” deep.

Next hang the gate. It is a good idea to use patio stones at the gate to prevent digging under the gate. Last, cover the ground with wood mulch or use the recycled tire mulch, pea gravel can also be used but it can be hard on a dog’s feet
